Making Ireland Fairer
Protecting the vulnerable
The elderly, the disabled, the young, recent immigrants and the unemployed, together with other minorities, face daily obstacles in realising their rights. The Equality Authority has done sterling work, particularly on behalf of Travellers, in this area recently. I deal with a number of public and local authority officials in my daily work for Mary Upton TD advocating for the vulnerable. Most of these people are very good at their jobs and very professional. On the other hand, some are not always as attentive as they might be to their role on the coal-face, as it were, of ensuring the State meets all its legal duties connected with its status as a States Party to certain international human rights instruments.
Because of my training at Cambridge in International Law, as your Senator I am well placed to promote the constant connection between these international legal obligations and what happens on the ground in our hospitals and our schools. As your Senator I will be an advocate for anyone who comes to me asking for help in managing their rights-related interactions with the State.
