Making Ireland Fairer

EPA predictions

Extract from Climate change scenarios and impacts for Ireland J. Sweeney et al., 2000-LS-5.2.1 (published by the EPA), xiii:

"...In the summer months drought stress is likely to become increasingly important. Irrigation will become important for all crops in the eastern half of the country. This will have a major economic impact. Irrigation in dairying in the drought-prone south-east is currently justified economically only if water is available without charge. With the projected scenarios, a much greater area of agricultural land will be affected by drought, and the quantities of water required for irrigation will be larger. There may also be competition from other users, and the consequent economic effects may make certain crop production uneconomical.
